Christina Aguilera gets blunt at the AMAs

Christina Aguilera showed up at the 2012 American Music Awards rocking a completely different look. We asked her stylist, David Babaii, how we can get the same style at home.

Christina Aguilera's hair isn't typically on our list of celebrity hairstyles to copy, but her blunt look from the 2012 American Music Awards was quite the pleasant surprise. The Lotus singer stepped onto the AMA red carpet clad in a purple Pamella Roland gown and short blond style.

Christina Aguilera is embracing her post-pregnancy body >>

It seems like everyone has an opinion over Aguilera's awards show look, though we're loving it — it's a nice break from the two-sizes-too-small dresses she's been wearing over the past couple of years. The hair is quite the nice addition, though it is quite the departure from the long extensions she's been wearing as of late, but hairstylist David Babaii said she was all about it.

Christina Aguilera: I didn't talk about my fat! >>

"Christina can pull off any look. She allows me to play with different styles and master the art of illusion," Babaii said Monday.

To create the look at home, he advises us to:

  • Invest in a great cut.
  • Prep the hair with IT&LY Hairfashion's line of cruelty-free Purity Design products.
  • Use a vegan round hairbrush and ionic blow dryer to get a sleek finish.
  • Finish with IT&LY's Pure Definition Spray for touchable hold and Pure Water Drops serum for shine.

Or, invest in a Cleopatra-style wig if you're not quite ready to take the plunge on your own.

Kate Middleton is rocking a new hairstyle to go along with her designer duds. We enlisted the help of celebrity hairstylist George Gonzalez to find out how to get the same look at home.

Is it just us, or does Kate Middleton's new bangs-centric hairstyle look like the style original Charlie's Angels star Jaclyn Smith rocked in the late '70s?

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out with the new style during an appearance at London's Natural History Museum on Nov. 27. She didn't get anything too drastic done — the biggest change is the new bangs.

And apparently, she's not too sold on the new look yet.

"I told her I loved her new hair style," spectator Joanne Baldwin told the Daily Mail. "She said, 'I'm not sure about it. It's a bit windy today.' I said don't worry, it looks lovely.'"

It totally does and we love that certain royals aren't too chicken to try out a new look. And Kate? Hair grows, so you're not stuck with it forever.

Loving the look? We turned to one of Oprah's favorite stylists, George Gonzalez of George the Salon Chicago, to find out how to ask for the same look at the salon.

"Kate's iconic cascade of curls get a modern update with the addition of a softly sculpted angled fringe that blends perfectly into her long layers," he told SheKnows.

"The staple of this style is of course the bang," he added. "The key to re-creating this is having your stylist cut an angled fringe with some of the sections skimming the tip of the nose in order to have the hair long enough to effortlessly sweep the fringe to one side. To soften this otherwise blunt edge when first cut, make sure your stylist 'chips' into the hair with the tips of the scissors."

And to do it at home? Gonzalez gave us a rundown of the steps it takes to get royal-ready hair.

Get the look

  • Apply a leave-in conditioner and use a wide tooth bone comb to detangle, applying a volumizing mousse throughout. Concentrate this on the roots in order to create a style with height that doesn’t lay flat.
  • Blow out hair in 1-2-inch sections using a large boar bristle round brush paired with a thermal protectant to ensure the shine factor is amplified. Gather bangs and pin separately as you will style these later. Twist hair around the round brush and direct heat from the dryer on it for a few seconds. This will help create that loose, cascading effect.
  • Clip each section after the twisting motion is completed in large pin curls and mist with a flexible light hold hairspray.
  • For the bangs: I find styling fringe is easiest when you can start with fresh, damp strands. If they have dried too much so far, take a water bottle and gently mist them with water. Then, take a small round brush and start drying with a cupping action on a high fan setting. As the bangs become drier, start a brushing action on a low fan setting, directing them in the desired angle.
  • Let cool. Take down the rest of your hair to reveal soft curls using your hands to style.
  • Accentuate the loose waves by taking sections and curl with a jumbo curling iron for this iconic royal style. Mist with a light hold hairspray to seal this soft, bouncy style.

Not too difficult! Now, if he could only tell us how to get Kate's designer wardrobe without the five-figure price tag. Someday...

Tell us

Do you like Kate Middleton's new hairstyle, or do you prefer her old 'do?

Kelly Osbourne's choice words for purple-hair haters

$

Kelly Osbourne's purple hair is dividing the masses. Either you're on board with the lavender locks trend, or you're against it — in which case the Fashion Police host presumes you've got "housewife hair."

Kelly Osbourne

From blonde to gray and now lavender, Kelly Osbourne's hair color choices have everyone — including her own mother — talking.

Kelly Osbourne, seen here in full purple-haired glory at the VH1 Divas 2012 event on Dec. 16, recently spoke to Glamour magazine about the reaction she gets to her curiously colored tresses.

"When I was 13, I had hair the color of gold down to my butt," the slim and trim 28-year-old explained. "I had an argument with my mom and yelled, 'F**k you!' and chopped off half my hair. My dad could not look at me without pissing himself laughing."

Rehabbed Kelly Osbourne now drinks "for fun" >>

Kelly's mother, Sharon Osbourne, still hasn't won the hair battle with her daughter. "She wishes I would go back to blonde," the Fashion Police host went on. "She'll call me, really serious, and say, 'I think it’s time for a change.' I'm like, 'Mom, you have hair the color of a fire engine.'"

Fair enough, but why not a bright, bold red for herself?

Kelly Osbourne elaborated on the idea, "I would look like her mini-me. I tried red once, and I looked like a carrot. I also wouldn’t go too brown, because then I would look like my father. But I've tried green, blue, purple, black. The lavender I really like."

Kelly Osbourne named one of 2012's worst-dressed stars>>

"I dyed my hair shades of gray because I like it, and it pissed a lot of people off," she went on to say when asked about how she responds to her purple-hair haters. "Now I get tweeted 20 pictures a day of girls coloring their hair like mine. So if you don't like it, sorry — you have housewife hair."

Do you love or hate Kelly Osbourne's purple hair?

In honor of tonight's Golden Globe Awards, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite hairstyles starting with the 57th edition of the annual awards show in 2000.

2000: Halle Berry

2000: Halle Berry

Our first look back at great hair at the Golden Globes features gorgeous Halle Berry, a winner that year for best actress in a miniseries . The hair is classic Halle: short, sexy and tousled for a look that screams award-winning confidence.

2001: Julia Roberts

Not everyone can pull off the oversize updo, but if anyone can do it with poise and elegance, it’s Julia Roberts. She did it at the 2001 Golden Globes where she took top acting prize for her role in legal drama Erin Brockovich.

2002: Reese Witherspoon

2002: Reese Witherspoon

Eternal sweetheart Reese Witherspoon switched things up with her tresses in 2002, and instead of keeping things long and sleek, she gave us pretty pin curls that showed off her heart-shaped face and added some sex appeal to her Golden Globes look.

2003: Kate Hudson

2003: Kate Hudson

If anyone is the consummate expert in achieving the best in beachy waves, it’s Kate Hudson who did not disappoint at the 60th annual Golden Globes. The soft, shoulder length waves looked great with her strapless Valentino dress.

2004: Charlize Theron

2004: Charlize Theron

Stunner Charlize Theron stole the show where hair was concerned in 2004 when she showed up on the red carpet in a romantic side-swept wavy style with the addition of a chic clip completing the look. The delicate yet flattering style perfectly complemented her pale yellow Dior dress.

2005: Emmy Rossum

2005: Emmy Rossum

On the wrong person in the wrong outfit, ringlets don’t always make for a sophisticated hairstyle, but in 2005, Emmy Rossum really made ringlets work. They were bouncy, shiny and her hair was long enough to make the look chic versus childish.

2006: Natalie Portman

2006: Natalie Portman

Some faces are made for short hair and Natalie Portman has one of those faces. Her perfect pixie cut at the 63rd Golden Globes is a great example of just how fresh, fun and gorgeous a short haircut can be.

 2007: Emmanuelle Chriqui

2007: Emmanuelle Chriqui

Tanned, toned and always polished, Emmanuelle Chriqui showed up at the Golden Globes in 2007 with a wow-worthy hairstyle right out of the 1960s — and we loved it. Bouffant on top and long and tousled everywhere else, the look was perfectly suited to the mod green cocktail dress.

2008?

In 2008 the Golden Globes were canceled due to the Writers Guild of America strike that started the previous fall.

2009: Elizabeth Banks

The serious bling here really takes this award-worthy hairstyle up a few notches. We love how the sparkly accessory draws just enough attention to her look while also acting as a secondary piece of jewelry.

2010: Amanda Seyfried

2010: Amanda Seyfried

There’s something totally timeless about long, loose blond waves, and in 2010, Amanda Seyfried owned this look and made it look easy. At first glance, the style might seem too simple, but we think that’s what makes it chic.

2011: Jennifer Westfeldt

2011: Jennifer Westfeldt

Another blonde Golden Globes look we loved was from John Hamm’s other half Jennifer Westfeldt, who wore a relaxed yet elegant style to the awards show that year. The delicate waves are well-accompanied by a sleek gown and pretty drop earrings.

2012: Rooney Mara

2012: Rooney Mara

Last year’s it-girl Rooney Mara offered a refreshing departure from all those longer looks and feminine updos. Her Golden Globes hairstyle was sophisticated with an edge that we thought totally suited the girl with the dragon tattoo.

Beauty trends from the 70th annual Golden Globes

$

0
Beauty trends showed strong last night at the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards. Here are some of the popular looks that dominated the red carpet!
1

1940s movie starlet hair

Jennifer Lopez at the 2013 Golden Globes

Stars channeled their inner Veronica Lake and Rita Hayworth with side-swept vintage waves. In addition to host Tina Fey, this wavy style was seen on Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, Megan Fox, Heidi Klum and Isla Fisher, to name a few. Golden Globe winner Connie Britton went a step further with double pinned back pin-curls — also known as "victory curls," a popular style during World War II. Since she won last night, she chose her style wisely! The other side of this vintage trend was seen in low side buns and twisted/textured updos, like Jennifer Lawrence's braided low chignon.

Try retro-glam waves at home by parting hair to the side and curling 1-inch sections with a medium curling iron. Pin each curl to your scalp and spray with a flexible-hold hairspray like Living Proof Hold Flexible Hold Hairspray . Release the curls and use a comb to form "S" waves around your head. Finish with a second coat of hairspray.

2

Nude, naked skin

Adele at the 2013 Golden Globes

The stars literally showed off their skin on the red carpet. Instead of overly illuminated faces, we saw clean, perfect, yet natural-looking skin. Blush was in rosy, tawny or nude/beige tones, mimicking a natural flush. Except with a few bright pops of color we saw pale pink, nude or Champagne tones on lips and with a good balance of high-shine or matte colors. Stars like Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Connie Britton and Adele all showed off these feminine, natural lips.

Get flawless skin at home with a high-definition foundation like Urban Decay Naked Skin Liquid Makeup . Follow with a nude-toned blush like L'Oreal Paris Visible Lift Color Lift Blush in Nude Life and pink/nude lip gloss such as Sephora Collection Ultra-Shine Gloss in Shiny Perfect Nude .

3

Metallic, smoky eyes

Julianne Houg at the 2013 Golden Globes

Most of the stars wore a smoky eye at the 70th annual Golden Globes. The twist? Instead of traditional black, the stars used metallic tones. Some notable looks: The bronze palette on Julianne Hough , charcoal-metallic tones on Morena Baccarin and silver on Hayden Panettiere.

Rock the look at home with a smoky eye palette such as Too Faced Smokey Eye Shadow Collection .

4

1960s bombshell hair

Claire Danes at the 2013 Golden Globes

We saw glimpses of Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot on the red carpet. Sarah Hyland and Maria Menounos invoked memories of Sophia Loren with their brunette, parted in the middle, high-volume, va-va voom hair while Katharine McPhee oozed Italian-screen goddess with her high messy bun, smoky eyes and nude lips. A high-volume, high-styled ponytail with full, curled bangs gave Zooey Deschanel a '60s Bardot look .

New mom Claire Danes looked St. Tropez-gorgeous with ultra-blonde, bedroom sexy hair, smoky eyes and nude lips. Finally, bombshells don't have to be female... Julianne Hough unleashed her inner Elvis with a fabulous pompadour. With slicked sides and a high pouf, her bob was transformed into a style worthy of rock legends.

To get easy bombshell hair at home, add a dollop of volumizing mousse to your hair. One to try is Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Mousse . Next, blow dry with a round brush. When you are done, flip your head upside down to create volume and texture. For added volume, tease 1-inch sections of hair toward the back of the crown of your head.

5

Sleek and natural

Actresses Sienna Miller and Olivia Munn stunned on the red carpet with slicked back buns and barely-there makeup. George Clooney's girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, rocked the trend with long, sleek hair.

Get this easy look at home by slicking a shine serum, such as L'Oreal Professionel Mythic Oil into your hair. Create a deep side part and slick hair back into a bun. Fasten securely into a low knot and you are good to go!

6

Fabulous nails

Zooey Deschanel at the 2013 Golden Globes

Nail art has made its way onto the red carpet and is here to stay! Actress Zooey Deschanel had retro movie camera and film images painted onto each of her nails, while Adele had glitter to match the sparkle of her look.

Embellish your nails at home with easy to use nail polish strips, such as Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips in Bling It On or Glitz Blitz .

Oscar hair: How will the leading ladies wear their locks?

$
0
0
We asked Debi Dumas, Hollywood's master of hair color, how she would do these leading ladies' hair for the Oscars. Here’s what she said!
Naomi Watts

The blondes

Naomi Watts

Naomi is a great example of this season’s buttery blonde — her one process color totally screams 2013! She will look spectacular in a bright red or shimmery golden dress, and a loose, wavy chignon. Her blonde is golden and sunny and she will keep her look classic and simple to make her both memorable and stylish.

Amanda Seyfried

This Les Mis star will shine, even without a personal nomination. She's this year's perfect "ombre" girl. She really got it right, as her golden blonde starts deeper at the crown and gradually gets more platinum toward the tips. Amanda will look spectacular with her hair deeply parted, and some wide Veronica Lake-ish sort of waves stacked off to one side. Sexy, but sophisticated.

Helen Hunt

Helen shines as our "natural sun streaked blonde." Her hair has that beachy champagne hue, and hand-painted highlights make her color pop. All my clients request this look during summer. I think she will hit the carpet in a rich deep blue or a sparkly silver gown and a more defined, but soft, updo.

Anne Hathaway

The browns

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is rockin' the short do in style. While the majority of the actresses are going long, Anne has chosen that classic, shagged pixie in a rich chocolate brown. I would throw in a few caramel brown pieces to give her hair a bit more texture, but nonetheless, she will be a showstopper. I predict a strapless fitted gown, in black or emerald green to accentuate her flawless skin, and some soft finger waves in the hair, a la pinup girl.

Jennifer Garner

This year's awards are all about her husband, but Jennifer won't let him down on his big night. Her brunette locks will be Oscar worthy with warm chestnut and honey face-framing highlights.

I think Jennifer should wear her hair down with sexy, light waves that complement her without making an overly bold statement. Smoky natural makeup with chunky earrings. Hot, with a twist of class.

Jennifer Lawrence

My Oscar winner, both on the carpet and the podium. I'm in love with everything about this girl. Jennifer's hair is a perfect combination of golden brown, with a splattering of multidimensional highlights. She really emulates how beautiful brunette can be when it's spiced up with some thin textured golden pieces. I predict she will come to the carpet elegant but coiffed. I see her as the frontrunner of glam — think Audrey Hepburn meets Princess Kate.

Jessica Chastain

The redheads

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain has the chance to SHINE as our brightest coppery redhead this year. While she's gone soft and simple for the past awards, I think the Academy is where she's going to "bring it."

I would add in a few deeper vibrant red and strawberry pieces to make her hair color pop. I see her in a flowy nude gown with her hair whisked off to one side by a sparkly hair clip.

Adele

Adele holds a style all her own, and I'm sure she's claiming a golden statue for her performance in Skyfall. I love this reddish hue SO much more than her previous blonde. The golden bits help to break up her thick mane of hair, giving it some texture and contrast. I see Adele with a Brigitte Bardot updo and a heavily brocaded crimson dress. Think British royalty meets French sex kitten.

Amy Adams

Amy is our spectacular "strawberry" red. 2013 is all about warming up hair color, and Amy leads the pack. Her locks perfectly match her warm freckled skin, and this lighter red choice gives her an A+ on the red carpet. I think she should wow the crowd with an intricate wavy chignon and a fitted, vibrantly colored dress.

Helen Miren

The pinks

Helen Mirren

This is the wild card… will Helen show up with the same pink locks as she did at BAFTA?? I'm saying no. While it was fun and youthful, I think Helen will grace the Academy with her always sophisticated and stunning silver locks. Hitchcock was all about the element of surprise, but I'm not sure that pink hair on his lead actress would be what he had in mind. I would put Dame Helen back to her beautiful blondish color by the time the red carpet rolls out in Hollywood.

Jennifer Lawrence goes dark

What a difference a day makes! Jennifer Lawrence has gone from blonde to brunette just one day after her big Oscar win.

JenniferLawrenceBrunette

Clearly, hair is very important when it comes to the Oscars. We've talked about Jennifer Lawrence's romantic hair on the red carpet. We've talked about Ben Affleck's facial hair. Now, we're back to JLaw and her new hair color.

On Monday, the Oscar-winning Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook went from blonde to brunette. Her hair was done on Monday at the Rossano Ferretti Salon in Beverly Hills in anticipation for reshoots of The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire.

TooFab.com reported that the 22-year-old was very sweet to the staff even though she had a long night of parties post-Oscars. Her dark Katniss Everdeen look is dramatically different from the soft appearance we saw at the Oscars on Sunday night.

Lawrence was dress in Dior Haute Couture and despite a fall on her way to the stage to collect her statuette, she was a vision of grace and beauty all evening long.

However, Lawrence isn't the only one dyeing her hair for a movie role.

Actress Shailene Woodley has gone from brunette to red for her role as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spiderman 2.

As the love interest of Peter Parker, she's following in the footsteps of Kirsten Dunst, who played the same role in the original films starring Tobey Maguire as the title character. This time around it's Andrew Garfield spinning his web.

Audiences can expect to see the brunette Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on the big screen Nov. 22, while The Amazing Spiderman 2 won't premiere until 2014.

Kim Kardashian took the plunge and cut her signature long hair into blunt bangs. Do you like the look?

Kim Kardashian

Breaking news: Kim Kardashian got bangs!

Yep, the pregnant reality star finally took the plunge after testing out a clip-on version during her Cosmopolitan cover shoot earlier this year.

But, she's not really sure she likes the look.

"I can't decide," the reality star said in a series of Keek videos posted to Twitter. In the clips, Kardashian is shown at the salon with mother Kris Jenner and stylist Philip Wolff.

"Philip says, 'You should never listen to a pregnant woman.' But we'll do it," she said before getting the chop. "I just feel like I need a change."

Her stylist later told US Weekly that he typically won't let hormonal pregnant women make drastic style changes, but he thought Kardashian was ready.

"She wanted something new without being too drastic... I feel it's so important for a woman to feel sexy throughout her pregnancy, and this happened to be a small part of that for her," he told the magazine.

"Kim was so happy with the end result," he continued. "I personally love them on her, but then again, she has such an amazing face shape and bone structure that she has the luxury of wearing almost any style and it looks great. What makes Kim so sexy to me is that she wears her hair — her hair doesn't wear her."

But is she really doing it for herself — or for boyfriend Kanye West? Kardashian even admits that her ever-evolving style is thanks to her rapper beau.

“I dress for my man way more than for myself!" Kardashian said earlier this year. "He likes cool, drapey things. Very casual."

Wolff thinks this cut will be West approved, too.

"Kanye has a huge part in her [style] decisions... which I think is a great dynamic for them as a couple," Wolff added. "They both share a passion for fashion and style — I love that."

We're not so sure, but whatever works for them.

Gwyneth Paltrow is on a mission to keep us looking fit, healthy and coiffed. The actress is going into business with her hairstylist, David Babaii, to launch a new blow dry bar in Los Angeles.

GwynethPaltrowblowdrybarGwyneth Paltrow seems to be following in her BFF Beyoncé's footsteps by becoming quite the entrepreneur. Paltrow recently made headlines for her expensive spring wardrobe selections on her website Goop. Now, she's teaming up with her hair and exercise pals to get you ready from head to toe.

The actress is working with hairstylist David Babaii and her trainer, Tracy Anderson, to open David Babaii Blow Dry Bar in Brentwood, an upscale neighborhood in Los Angeles. The hairstyling location is set to open April 4.

Babaii told People, "It’s not just going to be a blowout bar. It’s going to be 'Hey, why don’t we do this with style your new body? It’s more about your lifestyle. There’s no judgment."

The location is opening in the trainer's new workout facility in the neighborhood. Clients will be able to tone their body, then hit Babaii's salon to get ready for a night out.

Since all three of the partners in the business are believers of an all-natural lifestyle, consumers will be able to buy hair care products from the stylist's line, too. There are 14 different products that eliminate chemicals like parabens, sulfates and petrochemicals. The line has not been tested on animals either.

Paltrow's dramatic diet to keep her family healthy>>

Babaii continued, "It’s all about healthy ingredients, healthy products. And not getting something that you can do at home. It’s going to be a feel good bar. It’ll be cool. If you want that sleek, straight Gwyneth look, great! If you want the Kate Hudson bohemian waves, great!"

Yes, Kate Hudson lives a Goop lifestyle, too. Not only are the two actresses friends, but they share the same hairstylist and a trainer.
